Supported Apprenticeships
Supported apprenticeships aim to create an inclusive training environment, where apprentices with learning support needs can thrive.
Individuals may benefit from a supported apprenticeship if they:
Have an active or historic Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Are a graduate from a supported internship programme, such as ‘Choices College’ (formally ‘Project Choice’).
Have a specific learning support need, which includes a learning difficulty or learning disability, that may impact their apprenticeship training.
Following an assessment with you, reasonable adjustments will be implemented as appropriate. This is the agreed individual support that will help remove any potential learning barriers.
Some examples of support could include:
- More frequent one-to-one sessions with your dedicated assessor.
- Training and assessment materials that are adapted to your learning needs.
- An appropriate programme length that is matched to suit your pace of learning.
- Coaching sessions to help you understand how to use assistive technology tools e.g., text-to-speech or speech-to-text.
- Individual coaching on ‘Cognassist’ – a neuro-inclusive support tool that provides learning and personal development resources that are catered to your unique brain profile.
Some learners with EHCPs may be able to access flexibilities to the usual maths and English requirements and achieve a minimum of Entry Level 3 in these subjects. An assessment will be completed to determine learner eligibility.
Apprenticeships are a real job that allow you to ‘earn’ while you ‘learn’, and work towards a qualification relevant to your specific job role. Our supported apprenticeship programme is specifically designed for those with learning disabilities, learning difficulties and/or autism so that we can provide individualised, additional learning support.
Currently, our supported apprenticeship programme is open to existing Project Choice interns and previous Project Choice graduates who have gained employment at HHFT. If you would like to find out more information, please email – apprenticeships@hhft.nhs.uk
