We usually ask for the competencies to be completed within 3 months of attending the training, however an extension can be granted if this can’t be achieved.
You will need to discuss with your Line Manage/Matron to ensure they are able to support you and ideally complete it within 6 months. Please email the clinicalskillsteam@hhft.nhs.uk and copy in your manager to state when the Clinical Skills Team can expect your document.
Discuss with your Line Manager/Matron to put a plan in place on how best to support you. If they feel that you would benefit from a refresher and to attend a practical session again then this can be arranged by contacting the clinicalskillsteam@hhft.nhs.uk.
If they feel that you do not need a refresher session and it is agreed that you can continue to complete the competency document, then once complete scan and email the document to the Clinical Skills Team. Please also copy in your Line Manager/Matron and detail that they have agreed that your competency document can be processed despite the delay.
If you have already completed the competency document and sent it to the Clinical Skills Team, and therefore we have processed it we should have a copy of this to send to you.
If you have not completed the competency document, then print off the competency again and obtain 10 supervised practices and the final sign off. Scan and email the completed competency document to clinicalskillsteam@hhft.nhs.uk and copy in your Line Manager and Matron stating that the document was lost and therefore there was a delay from the date of training to sign off, this will then be saved on your file.
Ensure you have completed all e-learning components and have attended face-to-face training. Your Green Brain will be green as soon as you have completed your competency sign-off.
If you have completed all of these, then please contact education.centre@hhft.nhs.uk to ask for this to be updated to reflect your competence.
No, once you are competent in the skill, it is up to you to keep your practice up to date. If you have not used the skill for some time you may decide to be observed again by someone senior. If you feel you would like to attend a refresher/face-to-face training session then this can be arranged by contacting clinicalskillsteam@hhft.nhs.uk or by booking onto a face-to-face session on Green Brain.

1. As a nursing degree apprentice:
No, you don’t have to repeat training under HHFT. However, the university will likely expect you to go through training with them.
Please be mindful, you can continue performing this skill in your clinical practice as a healthcare support worker, but not whilst you are in your nursing apprenticeship role.
2. As a registrant:
No, you don’t have to repeat training under HHFT.
Yes, please see the process chart for Cannulation recognition of prior learning (ROPL). Your manager will need to review your certificate of completion and your competency booklet from your previous trust. It is your manager’s discretion if they are happy on documents presented. Sign the recognition of prior learning competency sign off page. Once completed, scan and email this to the education.centre@hhft.nhs.uk and your Green Brain can be updated.
Certificates can be accessed, downloaded, and printed through your Green Brain profile:

You might not need to re-attend this training, as long as you can provide your line manager with your ePAD records from the University. You are not deemed competent during your time as a student nurse. Thus, if your line manager is happy for you not to re-attend further training and to proceed completing the competency booklet, please send your document to clinicalskillsteam@hhft.nhs.uk for verification.
If you feel that you will need a refresher, please enrol to this course through Green Brain.
