This is for healthcare professionals who have not undertaken IV Therapy training and require this skill as part of their job role or have not encountered the BD IV pumps being used in HHFT.
If you have previously gained competence in IV therapy within another NHS Trust please see the recognition of prior learning (ROPL) process chart and competency document.
Yes, although ideally this should be completed prior to the IV therapy study day, we understand that this isn’t always possible. The E-learning will need to be completed prior to gaining practical competence in IV therapy and your Green Brain will not go Green if this is not achieved.
To register on the pathway and gain access the e-learning and training dates, search for IV Therapy in Green Brain. You are now able to find this through the Dashboard > My Learning > Find Learning.
1. Click IV Therapy
2. Click Go to Course
3. Click Play for E-learning to complete pre-course and View for Face to Face Training dates
We usually ask for the competency to be completed within 3 months of attending the training, however an extension can be granted if this can’t be achieved.
You will need to discuss with your Line Manage/Matron to ensure they are able to support you and ideally aim to complete the competency within 6 months. Please email the clinicalskillsteam@hhft.nhs.uk and copy in your manager to state when the Clinical Skills Team can expect your document.
Discuss with your Line Manager/Matron to put a plan in place on how best to support you. If they feel that you would benefit from a refresher and to attend a face-to-face session again then this can be arranged by contacting the clinicalskillsteam@hhft.nhs.uk.
If they feel that you do not need a refresher session and it is agreed that you can continue to complete the competency document, then once complete, scan and email the document to the Clinical Skills Team. Please also copy in your Line Manager/Matron and detail that they have agreed that your competency document can be processed despite the delay.
No, once you are competent in the skill, it is up to you to keep your practice up to date. If you have not given IV’s for some time or are unfamiliar with the equipment then speak to your Line Manager/Matron to decide of you need extra support and to be observed again by someone senior. If you feel you would like to attend a refresher/face-to-face training session then this can be arranged by contacting clinicalskillsteam@hhft.nhs.uk or by booking onto a face-to-face session on Green Brain.
Yes, the new IV competency document now has 3 parts, meaning that it is a pathway to be used throughout your journey in giving IV medications and when relevant for your job role.
Therefore, you can still gain competence in IV therapy for the preparation and administration of IV medication via a bolus or gravity infusion set. If at a later date you move areas and require competence in part b or part c, these can be achieved as required.
Yes, please see the process chart for IV Therapy recognition of prior learning (ROPL). Your manager will need to review your certificate of completion and your competency booklet from your previous trust. It is your manager’s discretion if they are happy on documents presented. Sign the recognition of prior learning competency sign off page. Once completed, scan and email this to the education.centre@hhft.nhs.uk and your Green Brain can be updated.
Ensure you have completed all e-learning components and have attended face-to-face training. Your Green Brain will be green as soon as you have completed your competency sign-off.
If you have completed all of these, then please contact education.centre@hhft.nhs.uk to ask for this to be updated to reflect your competence.
