This is to be completed by newly qualified staff/ registrant, someone who has gained competency prior joining the trust but does not have any proof of competence, or staff who have their role requirements changed. Generally, anyone who would be administering oral medications and other non-intravenous routes in HHFT.

This is the document which needs to be completed by staff together or with help from their supervisor or line manager prior doing supervised administration of medications.

This document is to be reviewed by the matron or designated senior practitioner with the staff prior final sign off.

This is the formal HHFT Medicines Management Competency document wherein staff needs to be signed off prior independently giving oral medications or any additional routes.

Completion of Section 1(Basic Oral Medication Administration) of this document is mandatory and needing 6 sign off.

Other routes from Section 2 – 18: Section 2 (Controlled Drugs Administration) would be needing 6 sign offs if applicable in their areas; and section 3-18, the recommended would be 3 sign offs, but would generally depend on your line manager’s discretion.

Supplementary Workbook – can be signed off or completed with supervisor or line manager (Band 6 and above).

Competency Booklet – can be signed off by supervisor or line manager, whereas the final sign-off needs to be done by the matron or the designated senior practitioner (Band 7 or 8) in their clinical area.

When you have completed Section 1 (Basic Oral Medication Administration) or including Section 2 (Controlled Drugs Administration) in the final sign off. Scan the final sign off and send it off to education.centre@hhft.nhs.uk

The competency booklet is a working document that you can pursue to be completed during your career. You need a recommended 3 supervised observations for the additional routes, at the discretion of your matron or designated senior practitioner.

No. It is your accountability and responsibility to ensure that your competence is up to date prior to administration of additional routes besides oral medications.

It is your main responsibility to keep record of your competency and supplementary document. Your matron or designated senior practitioner also needs to keep a record of further achieved competencies.

You need to show your matron or designated senior practitioner your previous competency document. You will then need to undergo Medicines Management - Recognition of Prior Learning and have 1 supervised practice.

Once completed, the final sign-off page needs to be scanned and sent along with your evidence or prior competence to education.centre@hhft.nhs.uk before you can start administering oral medications in HHFT.

You need to complete the full process of the Supplementary and Competency documents under HHFT policy.

Yes. You will need to complete both the Supplementary and Competency documents under HHFT prior to independently administering oral medications and additional non-intravenous routes.

No. If you have been certified and have proof of competence, you do not have to complete these HHFT documents.

You will not need to complete these documents once again unless you want to be signed off using the other routes of administration.

If your role has changed ie. Band 4 to Band 5, then you will need to complete competency including the additional routes in agreement with your matron or designated senior practitioner.
