The term 'clinical supervision' can be a formal or informal arrangement that helps support the practitioner to develop within an area of practice linked to their professional development needs and job role requirements (Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, 2022).

Clinical Supervision should provide an environment which is confidential and safe for Staff to reflect on and discuss both their professional and personal responses to their work. The overarching aim of Clinical supervision is to support staff in their personal and professional development whilst reflecting on their practice (Care Quality Commission, 2013). See policy for further information Hampshire Policy on Clinical Supervision

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) views Clinical Supervision as a process of reflective practice and highlights it’s importance in the advancement of the Nursing and Midwifery workforce (RCN position on clinical supervision: Royal College of Nursing, 2022).

According to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, 2017) Clinical Supervision should include aspects such as:

  • · Supporting and enhancing practice for Patient’s and service users benefit
  • · Help the Practitioner to develop skills in reflection and link theory with practice
  • · Evaluating and reflecting on practice
  • · Being separate from appraisals and line management
  • · It is conducted within set boundaries whilst being systematic
  • · Identifies elements which are public and those that are confidential
  • · Fosters an environment with mutual respect that allows for clear communication
