The Blood Science Haematology department provides a comprehensive diagnostic service with the use of highly automated analytical platforms. Included within the Haematology Laboratory service provision is Blood Transfusion and Blood Coagulation laboratories. All Haematology laboratory services are provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Haematology and Blood Transfusion is “a UKAS accredited Medical Laboratory No.8082”. For a list of currently accredited tests please refer to the schedule of accreditation as published on the UKAS Medical laboratory website.
The laboratory employs a wide range of analytical techniques including coulter principle, High Performance Liquid Chromatography, solubility test and Westergren principles. There are several sections within the laboratory, which include:
- Automated Haematology – FBC- white cell, platelet, and red cell count and Erythrocyte sedimentation
- Microscopy for Blood and bone marrow review; and parasitology
- Haemoglobinopathies: routine and antenatal screening for sickle cell and thalassemia
- Glycated Haemoglobin
- Blood Coagulation: Routine screening – D-Dimers – – Thrombotic assay
- Blood Transfusion: cross-matching – blood grouping – antibody screening - antenatal screening - Keilhauer’s
The department comprises Haematology Clinical Consultants, Biomedical scientists, Associate Practitioners, and Medical Laboratory Assistants who are all involved in providing a high-quality, fast and cost-effective service.
