Candover Clinic and Private Patients

Candover Clinic is owned and operated as a department of the Trust. It is an investment to provide additional funding directly to the Trust supporting our NHS hospital services. The Private Patient team, based within Candover Clinic, are responsible for private healthcare activity across the whole Trust.

Candover Clinic opened in 2013 on the BNHH campus and has been a significant financial contributor supporting the Trust’s NHS services in delivering treatment and care for patients across the wider Hampshire population.

The Private Patient team work hard to ensure that Candover Clinic is successful and generates significant income for the Trust. We continually strive for growth and always rely on the teamwork and support of our colleagues within NHS service teams.

Private patients (PP’s) are Trust patients, just like NHS patients, with the key difference being that private patients self-fund their treatment (having already paid their taxes to fund the NHS) In all respects, PP’s are valid patients of HHFT.

The continuing success of Candover Clinic's services benefits the Trust and wider community in providing ongoing financial support for NHS services.

The Trust offers all HHFT employees and their partners and children a discount on its private healthcare services. A 10% discount is offered on all hospital fees (this does not always include consultant fees). Please call us on 01256 315010 (45010) for further details.

Services provided by Candover Clinic:

Outpatients

Candover's facilities include a stand-alone private outpatient clinic and comprehensive diagnostic centre. Candover Clinic is a spacious, modern, purpose-built facility with 12 consulting rooms and secretarial offices, three treatment rooms and a comfortable patient waiting area.

Minor Procedures Unit

Situated onsite in our outpatients department is the Minor Procedures Unit. This compact surgical operating space allows minor theatre procedures to take place under local anaesthetic.

The theatre space is optimally filtered which provides an ultra clean environment suitable for minor surgeries such as cataracts and skin lesion removal. The operating area utilises a laminar-flow technique which allows ultra clean air flow to be directed to the operating surface.

In addition to the new theatre space, the department also has two comfortable patient recovery rooms.

Candover Suite is a dedicated private patients ward that offers comfortable, safe care and en-suite accommodation.

To meet private patient and healthcare insurer expectations we staff up to a high nurse to patient ratio and provide 24-hour dedicated Resident Medical Officer (RMO) cover.

MRI

Candover Clinic incorporates a modern MRI scanning facility. Our MRI scanner has a wide bore, and short length unit. The scanner central hole is over a third bigger than other scanners significantly reducing the feeling of being in a small space during imaging.

DEXA

Candover has a dedicated DEXA (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) scanner. A DEXA is primarily used to assess bone density and body composition. As such, the two types of scans we are able to perform by the DEXA scanner are:

  • Bone Mineral Density
  • Body Composition scan

CT

Situated in a spacious, light scanning room our CT scanner also has a wide bore providing much greater comfort for claustrophobic patients. The unit’s “64 slice” detector provides super fast imaging allowing for much shorter patient breath holds compared with other models. The longer couch movement combined with short scan times enables scanning of entire body in one run.

Ultrasound

We have two high specification ultrasound machines at Candover Clinic and can often provide a “one-stop” service if scanning is required during a consultation.

X-Ray

Candover Clinic operates a new dedicated private patients X-Ray Room for all “plain film” imaging.

Insured and self-funding patients can transfer to private care at Candover Clinic at any time. We aim to make the transfer from NHS treatment as simple and stress-free as possible by working with our colleagues in NHS service areas.

Patients at the Emergency Department in Basingstoke now

Following Emergency triage patients may be able to transfer from NHS to private care on the Candover Suite. Emergency care prior to admission to the hospital is not normally covered by insurance and patients cannot transfer until the decision to admit has been made. If a patient is to be admitted and wishes to transfer to Candover Suite please call us and a member of the Candover team will come to meet the patient.

Currently in an NHS bed?

Both patients with existing healthcare insurance and those that wish to self-fund can transfer from NHS to private care at Candover at any time. Please call us and a member of the Candover team will come to explain the simple transfer process.

Admission for Private Treatment

We are very pleased to admit private patients to Candover Suite. This can be done via two slightly different tracks for insured or self-paying patients. In general there is a three step process, in all cases please call us and a member of the Candover team will advise the best course of action.

Private Respite Care at Candover Suite

Candover Suite offers respite care packages for suitable patients to be cared for within our private inpatient ward at BNHH. Respite care is suitable for patients who rely on daily care and support at home, typically from family and friends. It is also suitable for any patient who is medically fit for discharge from the NHS as a stepping stone before returning home after surgery or illness.

Respite care may be a good option to allow family and friends to take a break. Care is always Consultant led and we will identify a specialist appropriate for the patients needs for the duration of the patient's stay.

How it works:

Each overnight stay on the Candover Suite as a respite patient is £425 or £2,975 per week. This normally includes the Consultant’s fees. Occasionally an extended assessment on admission may be needed. The daily rate includes accommodation, meals, housekeeping and physiotherapy. Respite care does not include active nursing or additional treatment, but the Candover Suite nurses are always available for both safety and peace of mind.

We always provide a cost estimate for every stay in advance. The patient will be expected to pay prior to admission or on arrival if transferring within the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.

If you become aware of any patients enquiring about respite care please call us.
