We encourage clinicians to call or speak face to face regarding any mental health queries or referrals in the first instance - see ‘contact details’
Criteria for referral is that the service user is:
- over 18
- currently an inpatient in RHCH or BNHH
- presenting with a suspected or known mental health condition and requiring mental health support whilst admitted to HHFT hospitals.
Reasons for referral include:
- Medication advice/review
- Second opinion for capacity assessment
- Mental state review
- Dementia diagnosis
- Behaviour management
- Risk assessment
ALL formal referrals should be sent using the MHLT referral form to:

The MHLT clinical team will contact the nurse-in-charge/clinician of the referring ward within the hour to discuss the referral and agree an estimated response time.
