The Learning Environment Team facilitates the placements of non-medical health care learners (students and trainees) who have practice placements at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We support a large number of learners across the organisation's three sites - Andover War Memorial Hospital in Andover, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke and Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. This includes learners from a wide range of health care disciplines and includes Allied Health Professionals, Clinical Psychology, Healthcare Science, Nursing and Midwifery, Operating Department Practitioner, Paramedic Science students, Pharmacy and Radiology. We are also the link between clinical practice and the academic institutions.
Learners are important members of our teams and we welcome your contribution in helping to deliver high standards of clinical care to our service users. We value the fact that our service users contribute to the development of health care staff for the future of agreeing to learners / students being involved in their care delivery. Whilst our staff will introduce you to service users as a 'student' we would expect you to do likewise when meeting service users for the first time.
We hope the information within these pages helps you to gain an insight into the Learning and Education at Hampshire Hospitals including training opportunities and resources.
For further support please do not hesitate to contact us.
We work across all sites, but some of us are based within the Education Centre at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital. However we also often work remotely, if you cannot find us we would encourage you to contact us at learningenvironment@hhft.nhs.uk instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Learning Environment Team do?
The purpose of the HHFT Learning Environment team is to provide high-quality placements for our pre-registration, non-medical learners and to support them to develop the right skills, values and behaviours so that they can deliver high quality, safe patient care. We do this in partnership with our stakeholders who include clinical teams, universities and colleges and a range of organisations in the healthcare sector.
Where can you find us?
Some of us are based in the Education Centre at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, but we also facilitate regular ward walkarounds across all sites, and so we may visit your ward at times.
How can I contact the Learning Environment Team?
If you have any questions around topics such as Parking, IT and placements, or any other student placement related queries please contact us via email through learningenvironment@hhft.nhs.uk.
I do not currently have necessary qualifications for your nursing apprenticeship’s entry requirements. Can I still apply?
We require all nursing apprentices to have completed level 2 qualifications in English and Mathematics (or equivalent) and a level 3 qualification (or equivalent) before they apply. Karen Bishop (Karen.Bishop@hhft.nhs.uk) can help provide opportunities to complete these level 2 qualifications, and the apprenticeships team (apprenticeships@hhft.nhs.uk) can provide a level 3 qualification that can lead into our nursing apprenticeships.
Who do I contact about apprenticeships outside of Nursing?
The apprenticeship team can advise on other apprenticeship programmes that HHFT provide.
I am interested in becoming a specialist nurse in a particular area, are the Learning Environment Team’s Nursing Apprenticeships appropriate for me?
After completing our Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeship programme, you become a Registered Nurse. You can then specialise into particular areas through further training.
I am interested in Paediatric nursing, are the Nursing Apprenticeships appropriate for me?
The Registered Nursing Degree Apprenticeship has Paediatric Nursing pathway which will allow you to become a Paediatric Nurse. However, this pathway is competitive and there are limited places.
Can I organise a placement for myself with a ward?
We do not allow apprentices to organise their own placements. You will be allocated a variety of placements to suit your curriculum.
Can I organise a spoke visit to another ward while on placement?
We encourage Spoke visits to other clinical areas, however please negotiate with your Clinical Team (Practice Assessor/Practice Educator) to arrange this, as it will be at their discretion.
